Babyn Yar Requiem
Sculptural Project 2010 Total expenditures
$100,000 I feel that I am the only sculptor who has the skill, the knowledge, the drive, and the emotional sensitivity to give this work the power that it needs. I eventually want this work to be installed on site in the Babyn Yar ravine. If that were to happen, the size of that work would be a 75 ft. diameter- with life-size bodies and a sidewalk that takes the viewer directly into the pit. To plan ahead for that, I will sculpt this 18ft. Monument with the additional intention of using scanning technology to help me in preparing for the Massive Final Version. Doing a little planning ahead will allow me to use this 18ft. Monument for the greater good of eventually creating the largest Holocaust Monument ever. The
base will be a complex skeletal wooden structure that must break apart
precisely. I
will need clay. Molds and tools and other materials (armature wire, pipes, hardware, fiberglass, etc) = $11,250. My sculpting time for the thousands of bodies, including the woman escaping with her boy: It will take me (at least) 1625 hours at $40 an hour = $65,000. Total = $100,000 |
